Assortment of items reflecting Carl Adkins' years teaching and coaching tennis at Buena Vista College and Buena Vista University. He was also faculty sponsor of Nu Delta chapter of Sigma Tau Delta and has records from that organization. Additionally, he also edited and published a group of lectures that were sponsored by this group. This collection also contains a book of his poetry.

Biographical Note

Carl Adkins was born in Grinnell, Iowa on March 8, 1937 and was graduated from Grinnell College in 1959. He married Paul Kirby and joined the US Army in 1960. Discharged in 1962, they moved to Moscow, Idaho, where he taught English while earning his MA at the University of Idaho. In 1964, they moved to Shenandoah, Iowa, where he taught high school until 1966, when they moved to Storm Lake and he taught English at Buena Vista College until 1998. He also coached tennis, sponsored the Nu Delta chapter of Sigma Tau Delta, founded the BVU Writing Center. After he retired, he married Catherine Foster Alter, where they lived in Denver, Colorado, until 2007, at which time they moved to Asheville, North Carolina. Carl died on January 27, 2017 in Asheville. A more complete obituary can be found in the BVU Archives.
