Biographical Note

Lorraine Brander was born in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, on January 7, 1923, to Edward W. and Rose Brander. In 1927 her family moved to Storm Lake, Iowa, and she graduated from Storm Lake St. Mary's High School in 1940. She attended Buena Vista College and graduated in 1946 with a Bachelor of Arts degree. During college, she was "Keyhole Kate" for The Tack. This identity was revealed years later in a 1996 interview of the burning of Old Main. Right after college, she taught English, history, and dramatics in Churdan, Iowa. In 1947, she married Glenn Dale Peterson on June 3 and had two children named Glenn Dale II "Junior" and Susan Elizabeth. She was also a special education teacher of younger children for 15 years. She then became the Intermediate Mental Disabilities Educable Special Education Teacher for 24 years. During her life, she had a long love of Girl Scouting and received her 75th year pin in 2012. She was also very active at the Buena Vista County Historical Society and was a member of the board for more than 25 years and was the vice-president of the museum for one year. At the college, she was a member of the alumni board and was awarded the "Jack Fisher Distinguished Alumni Award" in 1986. Lorraine also loved writing children's books and locally published three books. She died at the age of 91 on June 26, 2014, at the Methodist Manor Retirement Community.
